DaRico Jackson Celebrity Hairstyle & Author of “Ain’t I a Woman”

Celebrity Hairstylist DaRico Jackson has been giving body and perfection to the hairstyles of some of our favorite celebrities such as Tasha Smith, Elise Neal, Michael Ealy, Raven Simone, and Paula Abdul. After many years in the industry and great success, DaRico has decided to release a book titled “Ain’t I a Woman.” In the “coffee table book,” DaRico showcases some of America’s top notable black women. With film, editorial, and hair shows all under his belt, the book is set to deliver a powerful movement among black women, their hair, and their voices.

In this interview with Fab Life, DaRico discusses his love for styling hair and how he got his start. He also discusses his book and his work.

When did you start doing hair?
DaRico: I started doing hair when I was around seven years old. My aunt, whose 2 years younger ("Go figure!"), and I used to gather all the dolls in the house and play "beauty shop" everyday, all summer long. We would comb their hair one day and wash and restyle the next! Then I moved on to cousins, aunts, friends and the rest is history. In fact, my Aunt Felicia is now a hair stylist as well.

What aspects of the media do you enjoy most?
DaRico: The aspects of media that I enjoy the most is television and film because it's a true test of skills. There's nothing like seeing the hair that I've created perform on the big screen. I remember when I did Tasha Smith's hair for 'Why Did I Get Married.' That bob moved across that screen like an action hero! LOL! It swung back and forth and snapped back in place! I still blush when I see it! And the people are still asking for it!

What are the challenges that you face as an educator and platform artist?

DaRico: I think the biggest challenge for me as a platform artist and educator is the ability to captivate the audience. Not only do you want them to enjoy the experience, however, it is just as important that they learn and retain what they have seen.

How often do you travel outside of the salon?
DaRico: Between hairshows, Mizani education, and my celebrity clients, I am on the road probably three weekends per month.

What is the most challenging style that you have created?
DaRico: The most challenging style that I have ever created was when I turned three people into a flower garden for a photograph. I made a Calla Lily, Gladiola, and Bird Of Paradise. Sculpting the Calla Lily was beyond a challenge. I couldn't get my head wrapped around the idea, but I finally figured it out and it was beautiful!

What is your current project?
DaRico: My current project is a "coffee table book" called “Ain't I A Woman: 50 of the Most Influential Black Women and the Truth Behind Their Hair.” This is a full feature editorial of never before seen pictures of my "fabulous fifty."

Why a coffee table book?
DaRico: I have chosen to do a coffee table book for a few reasons. For one, it gives me an opportunity to create art from my point of view, showcase my work, and showcase a kaleidoscope of creative people in a way that no one else has. Each photo was created with and styled with my stylist and partner, Bynoskia Sam. The photos feature the work of various makeup artists and photographers that were carefully chosen to bring out the best in every photograph.

What is the book about?
DaRico: The book will not only showcase the beauty of some of the most important black women that we know and love, but “Ain't I A Woman” is a behind the scenes look at several high profile women and explore first hand the styles that make a difference in their lives and life styles. In addition, the ladies will talk about the challenges of baring the hair of a black woman.

Who is in the book?
DaRico: Vivica Fox , business mogul Tina Davis, actress Rochelle Aytes, boxing champion Yolanda Ezell, and director of Soul Food the Series Sam Martin, just to name a few.

How can we contact you for bookings?
DaRico: To contact me for bookings please call me directly at 310 926-5838 or email me at daricojackson@yahoo.com.

And "Designer of the Year Goes to"....Shavonne DeAnn

What does it take to make it to New York Fashion Week? 1000's of dollars? Representation by the top PR firm in New York City? Over 20 models? or how about a great marketing plan, four beautiful models, a driven soul, and one strong team!! That is what lead designer Shavonne DeAnn on the steps of Lincoln Center during New York Fashion this past September. Beyond introducing Shavonne for her ambition and dope designs sometimes to many words just can't capture what something else can. Watch the video of Designer Shavonne DeAnn and then you will understand why FAB LIFE labels her "Designer of the Year."

Introducing Shavonne Deann

LA: How long have you been designing?
SD: I’ve been designing for 7 years. Since 2003 when I started college. (Moore College of Art & Design.

LA: What was your inspiration to go up to Lincoln Park and present your designs in front of the building?
SD: My family, friends and colleagues always pushed me saying when are you going to design. When is Shavonne going to come out with her line, this and that. So one day I was talking with my boyfriend and we were just sitting down talking while I was sketching and we were discussing what were some different ways for me to show my line without spending little to no money. So After a few discussions I came up with me showcasing my collection Guerrilla style at NYFW because that was the perfect time. Why? Because its NYFW and everyone and their mother will be there from buyers to celebs and what better way to brody NYFW and show my true skill and talent.

LA: What was your first thoughts when walking up to the steps?
SD: I guess I will have to say happy, anxious, excited, a little nervous because I didn’t know if they were going to kick us out, even though there was some slight attempts, it still didn’t stop me or my team that had my back (laughs)! My adrenaline was pumping not knowing how people were going to react because this is New York fashion week, so it was a little pressure, but once I started speaking on my bullhorn I didn’t care what people were going to think or say. Everyone has an opinion and it’s not going to be for everybody!

LA: How was the reactions from guest going and coming from shows? And also people just passing by?
SD: It was insane! I got back a whole lot of positive feedback. It all felt like a dream. People passing by were doing double and triple takes. People stopping and taking pics, showing me love, saying how this idea was so brilliant, I love your designs, your so fantastic, I’m going to go far in life, the whole nine! So much to say, I can go on and on. It was just a blessing to be there at that perfect moment. Then to run into June Ambrose (my fashion idol), Beyonce’s stylist, Diane Von Furstenberg daughter to take the time out, their personal time for a few minutes and talk to me about how they love what I did and love my designs. I could of died but kept my composure. However, funny story is prior to that, I friendly stalk celebs on twitter to see if they’ll ever talk back and prior to this event I tweeted June Ambrose asking her what did she think of my collection and she said it was beautiful and I died. She totally made my day that day, so to see her at fashion week and personally meet her was phenomenal. She gave me great words of encouragement that I will never forget as well as what everyone else told me. A monumental day that I will never forget.

LA: How did it feel to be featured in New York Magazine?
SD: It felt AMAZING to be featured in NY mag. To me that was HUGE! I was in awe and still until this day I am! I’m still stunned that I made NY mag along with many other magazines and blog sites. Just blessed with this whole experience.

LA: Now that you have conquered such a great moment what do you see yourself conquering next?
SD: Next I see myself reaching out to boutiques, celebs and getting my designs on women for award shows and different events. In particular, Amber Rose, the Kardashians, LaLa, Angela and Vanessa Simmons, Rhianna, just to name a few.

LA: How would you describe the girl that wears your clothing?
SD: The girl that wears my clothing is very confident, yet sexy not afraid to show just a little and not to revealing. She feels like the room is hers when she’s walking into a room with hundreds of people.

LA: What was your inspiration for your Fall/Winter Collection?
SD: My inspiration was more so based on fabrics and pretty much the concept of the season being Fall and using those Fall like colors that are rich colors. I use all knits so I wanted it to be based off fun yet sexy apparel that still read across as sexy but comfortable. I’m all about comfort so just keeping that in mind.

LA: What can people find in the F/W 2010 collection?
SD: You can find lots of soft warm knits. Subtle, rich colors and sexy pieces that are very comfortable.

LA: You are the Fashion Director at American Dreaming Magazine and you design for your own company, what is a day to day routine for you?
SD: I must say it’s not that bad so far! As fashion director with American Dreaming magazine I create concepts and trends for our shoots, contact stores/boutiques to pull clothes, make sure things are on time from our writers, researching and keeping ahead of fashion trends, meetings with my team, it’s a lot but I manage (laughs) I mean grant it I have to juggle two jobs, but I love doing it. So it is true what they say if you love what you do then you really don’t have a problem doing what you do.

LA: How has working for a Magazine helped you with the development of your own brand?
SD: I’ve been with American Dreaming since the beginning when we first came out since 2008. I believe it has given me a pedal stool for me to show my true skill and talent. American Dreaming always firmly believes in giving people an opportunity to show the readers hidden talent and the magazine is the stage for people to show their talent. However, just paying attention and always taking mental notes how a business should be ran and just applying it to my past experiences that I have encountered as well.

LA: What do you think the future holds for you and your clothing line?
SD: I highly believe that the future looks great for me! I believe my brand will definitely have longevity and last a lifetime. I see myself being in boutiques/stores across the globe as well as being on celebs and red carpets. As far as me, I believe I’ll be getting a call from whoever invites designers out to Mercedez Benz Fashion week (laughs) and telling me they would like to participate in the show!

LA: Loving the Fall/Winter Collection when and where can we get our hands on some of your pieces?
SD: Thank you so much! Appreciate that! I actually just launched my first online store last Thursday Oct 14th! So people can go to shavonnedeann.bigcartel.com!

Just Taking a Chance With Christina Jeter

Sometimes being in a location where you think that you can't reach your dreams can hinder you from moving forward. Sometimes you are scared to purse your dreams not knowing how far you can get. Sometimes some people just take that chance and realize that the possibilities are endless. Check out writer/model Christina Jeters on how she stepped up to conquer her dreams.

LA: Hi Christina! Tell Fab Life a little about yourself and your personal background.
CJ: I am just a regular girl who is trying to be successful in life. I enjoy traveling, meeting inspirational people, listening to music and spreading positivity.

LA: What are some writing ventures you have worked on and what type of writing do you primarily focus on?
CJ: I write about a variety of things because to me the entertainment/media business will never go away and if I widen my expertise as much as possible then I will always be of asset to the industry. CJ: I do promotional modeling.

LA: Give us some insight on your new photo shoot you are planning “Nerd with Swagger” what is the inspiration behind it?
CJ: One of my favorite movies from the 80’s is revenge of the nerds and I was recently told by a friend of mine that a novelty shop sold the Tri-Lamda shirt from the movie and I ordered one for myself. I want to rep that being awkward, the underdog, and non popular is cool, fresh, and outstanding being that I don’t want to fit in because that means I don’t stand out!

LA: I see that you write for thesscritics.wordpress.com what could people find on that blog site from you?
CJ: They can see my current client press release that I do PR for former NFL/CFL player and celebrity chef Kerry Parker and my personal statement about what made me stop believing in the negativity.

LA: I know personally that it’s hard work right now in PR, writing, and even modeling what inspires you to just stay focused and keeping working?
CJ: The fact that I am not hurting anyone achieving my dreams, the great people I have met that help turn my dreams into reality, and the fact that people look at me and get inspired to pursue their own dreams.

LA: You have your own blog, what can your readers expect from you on the blog?
CH: blog is about my life, the good, bad, and ugly. I write about personal life experiences, things that intrigue me that I want to share with my audience, and cross promote people that publish my work.

LA: We like to think that the Fab Life girl is someone who is driven and well put together what do you think could connect you with that girl?
CJ: I am currently in the country and could get discourage that I am not where I want to be in life, but instead of feeling sorry for myself, I took the tools I do have access to too make my life the reality I want to live.

LA: What are some sites that your work for that your writing, pr, and modeling can be found on?

Imperfect Concepts With Tasha Robinson

Having a dream to be in the fashion industry is one thing but to actually live out your dream is a totally different story. That is why I was more than impressed with Tasha Robinson a young lady that despite economic problems, despite the hardships, and despite the “typical” rules for breaking into fashion made her own lane in this tough industry.

Tasha Robinson is the owner of Imperfect Concepts, an online boutique that resells vintage and pre-loved clothes to the public for affordable prices. After contacting us here at Fab Life it was only right that we shared Tasha’s story with all the Fab ladies.

LA: Hi Tasha! If you could describe yourself as a businesswoman in a few words what would you say about yourself?

TR: Determined and goal driven would be the words I use to mainly describe myself as a businesswoman. There are other words I could use but I emphasize those because you have to be determined to accomplish your vision.

LA: We want to know about your online company Imperfect Concepts, what brands do you carry, what are some typical styles you would have on the website?
TR: Imperfect Concepts is an online high-end women’s resale boutique that carries a vast variety of lines and brands. Being that we are a resale shop we don't carry mass quantities of a particular brand. The boutique also carries a large vintage items. I think women relate more to vintage clothing: the bohemian chic, the businesswoman, the college girl, or stay at mom can shop resale or vintage at Imperfect Concepts. We cater to all.

LA: You have many praises from buyers to fashion features about Imperfect Concepts what do you think draws women to the site the most? TR: I think it's because I'm a firm believer on customer service and I'm accessible to my customers. I want everyone that comes to my store to feel they are my number one customer, because they are. I go beyond the call of duty with my customers. I love doing follow ups to see how the item is working within their wardrobe. I want to be the girlfriend they seek advice from and I feel I've attained that. Imperfect Concepts has a high retention rate with return clients.

LA: I would consider you a Entrepreneur, you are out here you putting in the hard work and building a successful company what do you think is the most important thing to take with you on the journey for any woman looking to start a company?
TR: The most important thing is to ALWAYS remember that not everyone is going to see your vision or think you are going to be successful. Push on in spite of that. Believe in yourself and your brand. Give your company a 150% all the time nothing less.

LA: Having your own company has to be demanding, how do you balance everything throughout the day so that you wouldn’t overwhelm yourself?

TR: Honestly, I have yet to master the balance in my life! I still do yoga in the morning and watch ESPN/CNN. Those are things I do for myself that haven't changed. My personal life flows pretty well with my company since I work for myself. Also, I write a to do list daily and I love the part of marking out the things I have completed! Furthermore, I take a mini vacation the first weekend of the month to visit my parents, which keeps me as sane as possible! As, for my friends, I have a super small group of friends and we all work for ourselves so we know what is like to be super busy on a project, but we make time for each other. So I guess I do have a balance in my life. My life intertwines pretty darn well.

LA: How did you come up with the name Imperfect Concepts?
TR: I was sitting on my bed and had conversations with numerous of friends about the name. Imperfect Concepts, was not the original company name. The name literally just came to me after talking to one of my best friends, and as they say the rest is history now.

LA: What was the inspiration for Imperfect Concepts and what steps did you take to get started?
TR: I always knew I wanted to run my own business and in high school I knew I wanted to open my own boutique. After college I worked in retail for a year and half to get more of the operational side of running a business. I also did plethora of research. I talked with business owners, found a lawyer and an accountant. I actually bought a “Dummies' Guide!" I say I took a leap because I left job security to do my passion.

LA: For the women who have never been on the website, what can they look forward to and what are some of the price ranges are the clothing?
TR: They can look forward to excitement for all the great finds they will discover. Literally, I feel Imperfect Concepts is an undiscovered treasure on the internet. Women will be amazed at the variety of items we carry and the level of service they receive from me as a small business owner.

LA: What benefits does your site offer that they couldn’t get from other retailers?
TR: I am a personable person and customer service driven vs. big name retailer. When chain department stores first started out they were customer service driven now that they make millions in a quarter they've lost that quality. My company wouldn't thrive if I didn’t have my customers so I want to be loyal to them and for them to be able to reach me.

LA: Starting your own business can be tough what obstacles have you faced and what are some ways you have worked through those obstacles?TR: Knowing where to start was the biggest obstacle. It is easier to renovate a business from within than to build from the ground up was far more difficult than I assumed. Finding capital is also something hard. Luckily I had a savings, but (kickstart.com) is an amazing website, as well as inc.com, and watching CNN helps me a lot. I cannot sing their praises enough. Reaching out to people also helped me. When I launched, I leaned on my then boyfriend who still supports my best friends and me to this day. There are so many downfalls that can happen but there are so many joyous moments that outweigh those. I don’t call obstacles, obstacles I say they are stepping-stones to help me reach my goal.

LA: What advice could you give young girls looking to move forward and conquer their dreams?
TR: Believe in yourself and don’t listen to the naysayer’s. I know it's extremely hard but keep pushing to the finish line. You can fail a million times but the success of succeeding one time will outweigh any of those set backs! Be positive no matter what your circumstances are. Enjoy what you do, the money will come--don’t rush it.

LA: Where do you see your company Imperfect Concepts in the next 5 years?TR: I don’t know why this is my favorite question to be asked. Maybe cause I truly just don’t know the answer. I take it a day at a time. It's cliché, but I've learned to live in the present because it is a present from above to be living in it. I want success for my store and I want for it be a household name, but what I want is not always want the man above wants so, I'm going with the flow!

LA: What else would you like Fab Life viewers to know about yourself and Imperfect Concepts?
TR: Umm, that I'm freaking awesome! Lol! But really, if they only take away one thing from this, it's that Dreams do come true and believe in them because your dreams can become your reality. I am a living testimony to that. #POW giggles

Ramblings with Rin

Being a fashion blogger doesn't mean you can't connect and enjoy other fashion bloggers. The thing I LOVE the most about the blogging community is the creativity, you get so inspired when you are scanning through the different sites and coming across Rin's blog was no different. When looking at Ramblings of Rin the first thing I noted was that Rin (the owner) loved thrift shopping. I love thrifters seriously they can take an item at a thrift store and make it into a fashionable piece.

Not only is Rin a blogger she is also a fashion student and her blog Ramblings With Rin gives her readers a inside view of the fashion world from her perspective, from thrifting, latest fashion updates, to her style snapshots and more. I had to get Rin on the blog and she agreed to give our FAB LIFE readers a few tips for the Fall Season and on thrift shopping.

LA: What inspires you the most about fashion?
RIN: The thing I love most about fashion is that it truly is my way of expressing myself. I always try to wear something I like and something that "speaks to me" rather than just following trends, and that I think is the true beauty of fashion: being yourself!

LA: I was going through your blog and you seem pretty big on thrift shopping, what are some pointers you can give someone who seems to not have any luck at thrifting?

RIN: Ah, yes I am a big thrift store junkie. The feeling of walking out of a thrift store with someone else garbage is actually quite thrilling. I have 3 main rules when it comes to thrift store shopping. One, Be Patient: thrift stores require time and a willingness to rummage through every rack. Second: Be open minded: I always tell my friends and readers think of what you can do with a garment. A simple hem or belt or necklace can change the whole look of a garment so think big picture! Lastly, Have Fun! So many of my thrift store finds are the ones that I tried on for a good laugh. You really never know what it will look like until you see it on so try everything (no matter how ridiculous) on!

LA: What do you think is the best part about thrifting?
RIN: I love the feeling of finding the perfect pair of pants for $10 or a adorable dress for $12 or the perfect black blazer for $13. It really is the best feeling. Its easy to go into a store and pick out a new garment but I like searching for my clothes. I have a deeper connection with my clothing that way.

LA: What summer item would you suggest all fashionista's keep to add with their Fall wardrobe?
RIN: This is a hard one. I would have to say that any fun bright colored jewelry. We are seeing a lot of muted palettes for fall, so it is important to keep your outfit looking fresh and jewelry and accessories is the easiest (and cheapest) way.

LA: When thrifting do you try to follow the trends for the season or do you go more with your own personal style?
RIN: A little bit of both. I feel its important to listen to your heart first but keep in mind upcoming trends. I have always had a knack for predicting trends but I wasn't really aware of it because I just bought what I loved. They just happened to be items that were or were going to be in fashion.

LA: Tell Fab Life viewers a little more about your own fashion blog?
RIN: My fashion blog, Ramblings with Rin, started in about mid February but has just recently gotten more followers. I blog about what I love: thrifting, cool items, furniture, pictures, my daily outfits inspiration. I blog about stores I like and blogs i like. I just try to offer inspiration to people and I love getting inspiration. I feel like we can all use each others help. Ideas all have to start somewhere, and I hope my blog can offer that.

LA: What advice would you give someone on personal style and thrifting?
RIN: BE YOURSELF! I cannot stress this enough. Do not worry about looking ridiculous or out there. Buy what attracts you or speak to your own personal style. Always have an open mind because fashion is never and will never be put in a box. Have fun with what you are wearing to because that is what truly sells a look or trend!

TN Model Feature: Amberlynn Holder

Where are you from? Originally Connecticut but I’ve been living in TN for 14 years now!
How long have you been modeling? Four years.
Biggest Accomplishment modeling so far?
Wow, this is a tough one. There are many things that I feel have been great accomplishments for me in my modeling career, since I’ve started. When I think of the “biggest” accomplishment, one of the first things that comes to my mind would be seeing my first model portfolio for the first time. It was a huge sense of accomplishment! Seeing the final product of all of my hard work, and everyone’s involved, as well as knowing that this was a tool to begin my professional career which was an amazing feeling.
Most Memorable Modeling Moment?
Attending an open call at Wilhelmina Agency in NYC. It was one of the most stressful yet most wonderful experiences of my life so far. From landing at the wrong building, to running to the subway in 4-inch heels, going in the agency and looking cool, calm, and refreshed, and then trying to find my way off of Park Avenue South for the next hour and a half. It was an experience that really taught me more about the industry and gave me a taste of what models in larger markets deal with on a regular basis. It was truly a “if you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen” type of moment that ensured me that this is a career that I’m very passionate about and that I can do. Now that I can navigate through NYC, I can’t wait to do it again!
Dream Job?
Being the face of a major beauty or editorial ad campaign(s). Also, working as a model consistently is a goal of mine. Runway, print, editorial, beauty, catalog…. all of it is wonderful and something that I am pursuing.
Upcoming Projects?
•I’m currently working on building my résumé and portfolio through working and collaborating with creative and innovative designers, photographers, stylists, MUA’s and boutiques.
•I am actively working on marketing myself and looking into signing with a great, reputable agency that is passionate about the business, that will help to develop me as a model, plan a successful career path and find great work opportunities.
•The Fall ’10 Season is going to be packed with fashion shows, trunks shows, castings, portfolio shoots, and Fashion Week Nashville!
•A few other projects in the works for development with two of my modeling/talent mentors, Dee J. and Rita Williamson, a former model agent.

….The Fun Facts
Favorite Party Song“Wipe Me Down”-Lil Boosie
Favorite Designer
Another tough one! It’s definitely between John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, and Amanda Valentine.
Favorite Nashville hangout spot
The whole city is my hangout spot! However, I do have to say that I patronize Green Hills Mall quite a bit =).
Unusual hobby you have?
Each season I will go through my closet and create a collection with my clothing inspired by a haute couture collection. This Fall ’10 season is inspired by Derek Lam’s Fall collection.

Legacy Ink Part II Interview

Lovers&Fighters is the t-shirt collection from Semaj and Troy the owners of Legacy Ink! With the second part of the interview get to know ALL about Lovers&Fighters and how you can get your hands on a t-shirt from the collection!

The Concept of Lovers&Fighters is "Fight for what you love and love for what you fight" (Semaj Thomas) and "The balance between good and bad some what like the ying and yang" (Troy Cheairs)

When creating designs for Lovers&Fighters where does the inspiration come from?

(Troy) A lot of time from popular culture and other times from meaningless conversations that we have. I mean there is really no set format...we move when we are moved!

If a person wants to rock Lovers&Fighters t-shirts where can they purchase the items?

(Troy & Semaj) They can purchase them at www.lovers&fighters.com and at Legacy Ink, 727 South Church Street, Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The clown tee, what is that called?

(Semaj) It's called Gangster Clown, it's not new but it's going to be a reprint because people pretty much like that.

Now I love the "Peace Gun Tees" you have to explain the meaning behind it?

(Troy) Once again it all revolves around "Balance"! With the same two fingers that you make the peace sign with you can also make the gun sign. Its all up to you to decide which side your on.

How long have the company been around? and what do you envision for the future of Legacy Ink and Lovers&Fighters?

(Troy) Legacy Ink has been around for three years and in the near future you will not only see fly L&F shirts but will also be able to shop for more brands as we are looking into expanding your retail efforts.

(Semaj) We have a summer line out right now of tees where they can go and look at our new summer line, we are trying to come out with pretty much a monthly shirt, like every few months come out with a different design. Just to keep it in the people's ear and plus we are a new company we're trying to get as much exposure as we can.

What's next for Lovers&Fighters, what can we see next out?

(Semaj) Pretty much the newsletters so people should pretty much be on the lookout for the newsletters we are going to be coming out with and our new lookbook we are going to be coming out with for our summer line.

For more information or to get your hands on some t-shirts from Lovers&Fighters check out the website!

Legacy Ink Part I Interview

Walking into the shop of Legacy Ink I was amazed at the little shop that holds so much creativity owned by Semaj Thomas and Troy Cheairs, both graduates of Middle Tennessee State University. Legacy Ink located on Church St. has been the place for two years that the graduates has done work for Cricket, Hangtime, MTSU TXMD department, Phatkaps, Chase Boys and so many more that come into the shop looking to take their brand and place it on a t-shirt for promotion. Printing screen tees at the shop it seemed only to perfect for the boys to bring to life their own t-shirt line. Lovers&Fighters “Means the balance between good and bad somewhat like the ying yang, this is reflected in a lot of our designs” Troy tells Fab Life. Learning the history and listening to how Semaj and Troy started was impressive and finally sitting down to meet the guys was an overwhelming feeling. Walking into the shop of Semaj and Troy I really didn’t know what to expect. Semaj was my first interview about the company, radiating a laidback attitude he welcomed me into the dynamics of Legacy Ink and the growth of Lovers&Fighters. Troy himself was a different story with quite a sense of humor I could tell why the two was able to link together and build success in the heart of Murfreesboro. Starting out in the dorm at Middle Tennessee State University the two created their first line/brand “Revolution Clothing” which is now Lovers&Fighters a collection of t-shirts that follows a model of “Fight for what you love and love for what you fight.” Semaj said about the t-shirt line. When asked what separates the two from each other that helped to come together to build such a successful company Troy tells Fab Life “I believe that we work good together because we trust each other and allow each person to do their own thing but keep focused on the overall goal.” Making it’s mark on events such as Naked Without Us and Café Bella Industry Wednesday’s the future of Legacy Ink and Lovers&Fighters is looking bright and with a great outlook the Men behind the brands have a very definite plan to further their companies into much success and we are pleased to get to know The Men Behind the Ink Semaj Thomas and Troy Cheairs.

 1. Tell me a little more about Legacy Ink?

(Semaj) It’s Legacyinkdesign.com you can go online for more information. It pretty much started with me and my partner and another partner Ross, we started it a couple of years ago it was pretty much based out of a basement one of my partner’s aunties in Nashville, so we started in a basement to getting our own building, pretty much a few months after we opened up and we found a building in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and we got the building we been here for 2 years.

 2. You have Legacy Ink which is your screen printing company, how do you create the concepts around each individual company’s and the organizations you have worked with?

(Troy) We allow for customers to bring in their own designs or work with our graphics department were we can create custom designs.

3. I checked out your blog I really liked it, it shows the different designs that you have done! You’ve worked with Akpsi, Hangtime Clothing Store, you even did work with Cricket. What has been your favorite so far?

(Semaj) I would have to say doing that for Hangtime was pretty cool because we could be creative with it, as far as another client doing, we been doing stuff for Phatkaps and it has been pretty cool to coming up with concept and different things for him as well.

(Troy) Well, I would have to say I enjoy working with all our customers and affiliates but especially I like doing collaborative projects and working with charities.

4. What is a day like here at Legacy Ink?

(Troy) It truly depends. Some days are very busy and some are very slow but it’s always something to do.

 5. Is there any company around Murfreesboro and/or its surrounding areas that you would love to design for that you haven’t had a chance to do yet?

(Semaj) The Hundreds, they have pretty good concepts, and Johnny cupcakes he has a pretty good concept going around to. Like designing for people like that would be cool. They have pretty good following but I need to be where they’re at.

(Troy) Yeah, I would love to work with Jack Daniels. I would love to develop and design a marketing campaign for them.

 6. So, if someone wants to come and they are looking to get graphic tees made here at Legacy Ink what do they need to come with?

(Semaj) Pretty much they need to come in with their design, if they don’t know what they want we can offer them and get their design pretty much fixed up for them. Second if they do come in with a design it needs to at least be $300 pdi down, it can be in illustrator or Photoshop, that’s pretty much it. The color of their shirt that they would like, and what they designed.

7. What do you see in the future as a whole for Legacy Ink? Here Locally or Worldwide?

(Semaj) Worldwide it’s pretty much doing creative things, as far as helping other people start their line because it would pretty much be like doing and we have the experience, so that and helping other people develop their concept, and more than anything to get Lovers&Fighters out there.

8. I’m very impressed that two MTSU students has had such success, what advice can you give other graduating and future graduates for the future?

(Troy) “Plan your work and work your plan!!!” and make as many useful relationships as possible.

Tune in June 16th for Part 2 about Lovers&Fighters and how you can get your hands on a custom tee from the line!

Designer Denise-Richard Pegeus

I had the pleasure of interviewing Denise-Richard Pegeus, a self-taught designer and fashion entrepreneur. Denise unique, couture clothing is made for any woman looking for edgy, sexy, and stylish clothing. Denise's hard work attitude shows throughout her collection and it is my pleasure to introduce Diary of Joli designer Denise-Richard Pegeus and her journey of building her brand.
LA-How did you get your start in designing and what has been your favorite part of the process?
Denise- I first began as a young girl, designing and sewing with my mother, and modeling for my father/photographer. I jumped into fashion by owing my own shoe boutique. People constantly commented, and one morning I just woke up! After reading The Fashion Designer Survival Guide, I gained the confidence to step out on my own.I always had a love for fashion and created it for myself. It seemed like the right time just presented itself. My favorite part of this process is the networking, the shows and meeting new people. When my garments are created exactly as they were sketched on paper...seeing my work come alive and hearing the reactions makes it all worth the while.
LA-What can women expect from your collection this spring?
Denise-Women can expect a great deal from Diary of Joli' this spring. We are completing the Fall 2011 collection, which will be manufactured in December to show in February. We are also sketching, and gathering our creative team. We are working on the second chapter of the Diary of Joli'...and preparing for our introduction of Le'on, the menswear line. Denise is focusing on evolving and incorporating more detail in her designs.
LA-Tell us about the trip to South Africa, what was it like?
Denise-Denise's trip to South Africa was truly that...an experience. When she found out that she was going, she packed two suitcases - one full of garments, and the other full of shoes and jewels. Many of the items, Denise had collected over the years. Denise owned two boutiques in the Houston area, and also sold and designed jewelry for 15 years. She had a tremendous supply of jewelry that wasn't selling, and only accumulating. She believes in GIVING. Denise says, "God will bless you to give more. Be givers than borrowers." She feels inspired daily by the blessings that God has bestowed upon her...simply being healthy, having strength and her children in her life are so much to rejoice about. She knew that she was going to do a mission (give clothing to women from refugee camps), and was excited to connect and participate in any type of global sisterhood. This trip was purpose filled. Unfortunately, when she arrive, due to strict customs and heightened security from 9/11, Denise found that all of her pieces had been gone through, some damaged and even missing. She felt defeated, but forged on. She was going to make the most of the situation in which God presented her. Denise was able to visit several squatters camps, where the homes in which people live are just big enough to "squat in." These homes simply cover your head...nothing inside. She literally was amazed at what she saw and how her people were living...Thousands of shacks as far as the eye could see. This was amazing and transforming but yet very emotional at the same time. Denise looked introspection in the face as she visited homes and walked the streets. Children flocked and followed her everywhere she went...they were so happy to see a successful American woman. It was difficult for Denise to pick and choose who was the most in need, as she wanted to help everyone she came in contact with. The women there have a different lifestyle than our American ways. They were unfamiliar with what perms/relaxers were. Denise felt like she could share some of her American tips with them, and tune into some of the things that they could offer her. Denise was very much interested in how these women viewed fashion. "They have a fashionable eye...enjoy bold colors." So she dressed them in the items that she brought with her. Sometimes even given the shoes off of her feet and walking back to her living quarters each day. Denise says, "Anything I had on...if I could strip down to give the shirt off of my back and the shoes off my feet, I did!" Denise spent ten days there. When it was time to depart, she felt instant sadness...thinking about what she was leaving, and what she had to go back to. She was almost ready to go, because the amount of sadness she was feeling was overwhelming. At that point, she vowed to return often and do it all over again. It was an amazing experience, to see how our cultures differ. The children there were so focused on God, that they prayed all day everyday. They prayed through song...anyway opportunity that they could. She learned how our children, American children, really don't know how good they have it. We complain...yet, we have jobs (or the opportunity to get jobs) and they do not. Denise learned to cherish God's blessings. It was a blessing in itself just to see how others live.
LA-What was the inspiration behind the name of the company "Diary of Joli"?
Denise- There are many inspirations behind the name "Diary of Joli'." Denise created the pseudonym to represent her collection as well as her blog, which like a personal diary, divulges the good, the bad and the in-between that comes along with building a clothing line and a brand from the ground up. She documents the steps and pitfalls one must take to make it into the fashion industry. The Diary of Joli' provides a reference for the customer to connect with Denise and a resource for the aspiring designer. "The purpose was to divulge all of my secrets as if I was a ghost writer, writing down all of my thoughts and processes into this Diary. Encouraging people to take the journey with us...to follow along and unlock their style. To grow as we grow. " Denise's creole background, hailing from New Orleans, introduced her to French words and fashion. Joli', meaning pretty in French, is the key word used to represent her fashions. Again, Denise is very much inspired by French fashion...paying homage to fashion greats such as Coco Chanel and Catherine Malandrino. Most importantly, Denise wanted to create a legacy to pass onto her children. Everything that she does is for them. Each day she encourages them to fight and strive for their dreams. It was only fitting that she do the same.
LA-How would you describe the woman that wears Diary of Joli?
Denise-The women that wears Joli' is...
...confident, chic, fashionable, and edgy.
A Joli' woman is independent and is always on the move.
Our collection is geared toward the Jetsetter.
A socialite that grabs the attention of
everyone she embarks upon; is the woman Joli' aims to dress.
Our garments will allow this remarkable well-dressed woman to transition from day to night no
matter what the occasion.
If you are not a Jetsetter, wearing a Joli' design will be a great start to looking like one.
LA-You're an engineer and a designer how do you balance everything? And does it give you some sort of inspiration of what type of clothing to design?
Denise-I am very lucky to have a supportive family and a dynamic team behind me. That is how I balance it all. Educated in Engineering, yet pursuing a future in fashion only seems to be more frustrating at times. As an engineer, we are taught to draw straight lines; from right to left, and back to front. It is all about schematics. It is often difficult for me to just step back and design... to pull away from the technical, engineering side.
LA-2010 is said to be your year, if you could see your designs at any one place by the end of the year where would that one place be?
Denise-2010 is my year! By the end of 2010, I hope to have gotten media attention, and just put the brand "out there." Generating buzz and press are key for any new designer. It is all about making contacts, and this is the most important aspect of what we do on a daily basis. I look forward to completing more celebrity special requests. I have currently completed custom garments for Pocket Honore and Adam Licsko. would have set my foundation and assumed the position of "ready-to-launch." My focus will be on custom pieces and garment placing into boutiques.

LA-In fashion we all get inspired by many things what is your biggest inspiration?
Denise-Aside from being inspired to design from watching American Classical Films of the 1920s, I also become completely inspired from my weekly team meetings. After hearing what everyone is working on, and seeing how much my team is invested in my brand, believing in my cause and not just going through the motions, I will stay up all night and sketch.
LA-What’s coming up for Diary of Joli?
Denise-In July, Diary of Joli' will travel to New Orleans to participate in an Alberto-Culver Star Event during the Essence Music Festival. The event will be held on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3 and provide celebrity pampering to the clients. We are currently preparing a full-fashion house for this event, and look forward to taking Joli' to the streets for an official Joli' photo shoot in the French Quarter.
LA-Where can everyone get a hold of Diary of Joli pieces?
Denise-Currently, Joli' provides custom fitting, styling and designs. Our website is under construction, but will soon launch our online boutique. We are always accessible and open to questions and comments. While we prepare to enter into boutiques Spring 2011, followers can connect with us through various social networking mediums.
