Passing Those College Courses

Passing Those College Courses
By: Lakeithea

We can all sit around and discuss past failed test, professors who just didn’t understand, and boring classes but really does anyone ever discuss how to overcome those problems. I can admit being a full-time college student, working, extra curriculum activities and just life itself can make a college student overwhelmed and frustrated. Students have complained over and over about how professor’s just don’t understand that we can’t simply study for each class for three hours a day. Like who thought that would be realistic in any way?

Through my years of college I have found there are a few things that can be done that can actually help the college student to be able to cut down on the cramming and putting more into the work without having to overwhelm yourself.

TIPS
1. Actually participate in class- There is a difference between an active student then a sleeping student. The active student leaves the class with understanding of the lesson taught. When you finally get to reading the chapters you are able to relate what you learned from class presentations making it easier to keep the knowledge retained easier.
2. Speak up- Why leave out the door and be clueless. 1. This is your major it will benefit you in some way possible. 2. It will keep you from stumbling the day of the test because you were to scared to raise your hand and ask questions.
3. When reading information from power points and lesson books find a way to recite the information back to a form you would understand. Grab note cards and design questions and answer in a way that you understand and fit for your knowledge of the information. Never just read, you must retain and be able to recite out what you have learned.
4. Study the information continuously! You will find that the more you look over the information the more you start to remember the information. Even if it’s 30minutes a night. If your test is in two weeks those 30 minutes will come in handy more then that two days of cramming.
5. BIG ONE: Sit in front of the class. Students who sit in front of the class seem to participate more, therefore understanding more. When you are sitting up front you are less distracted and more active.

We will continue to provide you with more tips and college stories…P.S we can never give advice on college stories we haven’t experienced in some way ourselves!! Check out the past article Mental Thoughts of a Recent College Graduate.

Mental Thoughts of a Recent College Graduate

By: Eddie “Dr. Philosophy” Yancey, III

“What do I do now? Where do I go from here? What’s next in life? Where does my future lie” These are just a few of the many questions of most students who have the dignity of calling themselves recent college graduates. What once was a feat of purpose, excellence, and persistence now seems like a test of will power, determination, and patience as many recent graduates of universities, colleges, technical schools, and the like are struggling to gain access to the entrance of that “dream career job” that they envisioned while working those long hours at retail stores and restaurants as well as staying up all night to finish exams, projects, papers, and study guides. It’s so bad that a 2009 feature film called Post Grad highlighted the struggles that recent college graduates are having.

After speaking with many of my friends that are recent graduates of higher education, I’ve come to the conclusion that most recent college graduates are pretty much in three categories. The first category is the recent grad that has a career job in their field of study. The second category consists of those former students who are working at a job that has nothing to do with their degree, just to pass time until that career job does happen to come along. The third and final category is the graduate who already obtained a first degree and decided to pursue another one.

The job market hasn’t been too friendly for the recent grad, that’s why a lot of former college students aren’t in that first category. Of all of my friends who I attended school with or who attended college, I know maybe a handful or two who have a job that they actually enjoy that’s in their field of what they studied in school. So, in short, all is well and dandy with the ones in this category. They have a career job with a respectable company. The young adults in this category have some obstacles, such as possible having to pay Sallie Mae back, but all-in-all they are currently better off than the recent graduates in categories two and three.

All of the recent graduates that work in a job that has absolutely nothing to do with their degree inhabit category two. These individuals pretty much go to work just to get a paycheck. They know that they’re not going to make this job a career, unless something miraculous happens. They don’t want any part of the benefits package or anything else that would require them to stay at their job any longer than they’d have to. People that are in category two usually dislike working at their current job. To sum it up, the young adults that work at this job are just there to pass time until something better comes along.

The third category involves those graduates who said, “Forget this crazy economy and job market. I’m not going to sit here and wait around to hear back from all these companies where I applied to. I’m going back to school!” These young adults took the initiative to go back to school to gain more knowledge and beef up their resume. There’s nothing wrong with that, but the ones in this category had a lot of pros and cons to weigh when it regarded ultimately deciding on whether or not to go back to school. On one end, the current graduate students would seemingly have more classroom and practical knowledge when it pertains to their degree, giving them a better chance of standing out in a crowded workforce. On the other end, they may ultimately have more money to pay Sallie Mae, since finding funding for graduate school is way more difficult than getting undergrad paid for.

These are just a few mental thoughts that I, personally, have had since I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in May of 2009. The categories are just the grouping that I came up with after many hours of conversing with my buddies that are recent higher education grads. The category I would put myself in is probably category two. I have a job in my field, but I dislike the culture and ethics of the organization. With that said, I may be switching over to category three in the next year. Either way it goes, things will get better for me and the rest of us recent college graduates. While in undergrad, I had multiple internships, numerous jobs, above average grades, fraternity participation, and work around the community and campus and yet things still aren’t handed to me on a silver platter. My message and advice to current college students would be to stay focused on the task at hand, make good grades, utilize the equipment and technology around campus so that you can tone your craft as much as possible, get in good with the career center, build professional relationships with your professors, and attending as many career fairs and seminars as possible among other things.

These reflections are just a tale from me to other recent and upcoming graduates that things aren’t peaches and cream in the real, business world, but tough it out and weather the storm and things can’t do nothing but go up!

To Review or Not Review: Reebok

Reebok EasyTone Shoes
To Review or Not Review

For months I have been trying to decide whether or not to purchase Reebok EasyTone Shoes for a review or not! Ok wait let me give some of you guys that is a little clueless on Reebok EasyTone Shoes a little background (Just a little).

"An innovative footwear solution designed to tone and strengthen key leg muscles with every step."

Reebok has released commercials, videos, and even workout plans for their EasyTone shoes. Every time I come across a commercial I think to myself could a shoe really tone and strengthen my leg muscles? I know that tone legs on a woman is beautiful and we have seen the continuous praising of female celebrities by the media for tone legs. So, it was to no surprise to read so many reviews from women who purchased the shoes in order to get that tone and strengthen leg muscles.

Needless to say the mix reviews of Reebok Easytone did not help me to figure out if I really wanted to purchase the shoes or just return to the gym. What I found interesting about the shoes is that a lot of the reviews talked about pain from knee pain, leg pain, back pain, numbed toes that all worried me! I know when you work out you feel a little pain and they always say that pain is a good thing, when you can feel the burn you are actually working out but BACK PAIN? NUMB TOES? After I continued to read on and found that many other readers noted pain also but that the pain usually goes away after a few weeks to a month. Ok, so now my head is spinning can someone seriously tell me what's up with Reebok Easytone or what?

I don't know if I should go ahead and cut my foot off and hand it over with the purchase or go ahead and purchase the shoes and give it a try?

Another interesting take on reviews...some reviewers noted that after a few weeks they still couldn't notice a slight difference in their legs but that the shoes provided them with great balance and put a little extra pep in their step when they did their walking exercises in the shoes...well I guess everything works for something!!!

Dating in 2010

Today’s dating scene in the is totally different from how it was decades ago. Back then, signs of courtship and chivalry were very visual and existent. Nowadays, it seems like finding a man with those beneficial traits is few and far in between.
With the steady rise of the “independent woman” and the “pimp-tight man,” more and more relationships are strained. With close to half of marriages ending in divorce, many people wonder, “What’s the point of getting into a serious relationship?” Boys vs. girls. Men vs. Women. Mars vs. Venus. This tug-of-war among the opposite sexes will never go away, but instead of trying to destroy the battle, how about trying to win the war?
I know a lot of males are confused as to what females want. Likewise, women are torn as to why males act the way they act. We’re going to enlighten our readers on the current logic and thinking of a few males to let some of the women know how some young men feel about certain things related to relationships as of 2010.
Keep in mind that these are just the thoughts of a few males, so don’t judge all males based on the perceptions of our participants. Ladies, just be weary of getting yourself into a predicament that causes you to have unnecessary stress. Vice-versa to the males as well!
Question: What do you believe dating is now in 2010?
Garry Maddox
“Dating is suppose to be when you go out with a person because of you're interest in them, to see if they’re right for your life, and to see if they’re meant to be your soulmate. You’re suppose to date to find out who is best for you. A lot of people these days go on dates just to get a piece of ass. That is not how it’s suppose to be, but now most people just go on a date and treat it as a one night stand. That is what it is now. It’s more of a one night stand. It’s not about trying to get to know a person now and seeing if they’re meant to be in your life, but more like a one night stand. Dating now is based on the three F’s: Find them, fuck them, and forget them!”
 Brandon Harden
"Dating is some bullshit these days. It’s not how it use to be. Back in the day, a date was dinner and a movie or walking downtown. That rarely happens now because males don’t want to be seen creeping and females only want you for how much money you got or they think it’s too good to be true.”
 John Awokoya
“Dating to me is a social appointment, activity, engagement, or occasion arranged beforehand with another person! That includes stuff like going out to eat at a restaurant, bowling, movies, etc. It’s what we do when we are trying to get to know someone and possibly pursue a relationship with that person.”
Dallas Joseph, III
“Dating in 2010 is straight to the point at first. It’s a “we smashing or not” introduction and whether the people enjoy the sex determines if the next step of actually having real progress towards a relationship happens. It is all in reverse of the "old" days where the order was dating then marriage then sex and then kids. Now, it is sex then kids then date and maybe marriage. Many females keep looking for the dudes that they watch on TV because they believe that those men are how a man is suppose to look like and act. Females wonder where the good dudes at but they keep looking in the same places and same type of environments. If you want different results then do something different. We got an identity crisis going down now.”
 Mark Franklin
“Dating today is simple but complicated. Today’s generation has turned dating into a hobby-like extracurricular activity and has forgotten about the meaning and outcome. DATING IS AMONST DEAD! This generation has substituted dating with words such as “kickin’ it,” “coolin,” or “I fuck wit her or him the long way,” making room for more sex and less getting to know a person. In my opinion, dating is on the endangered list. Back in the day when our parents and grandparents dated, it was referred to as courting that turned into a relationship then marriage and then sex. Today, sex is first, dating is second or third then you BREAK UP. To put the question into two parts, dating is the interaction between two people who are looking to get to know one another better. Without commitments or promises, either or both parties can be casually dating others. The purpose is to determine what kind, if any, relationship will blossom now. Dating in 2010 is hooking up for the purpose of sex, ego, to “kick it,” and to have a “friend” on your team with no intentions to be serious. WE NEED THE REAL DATING BACK!”

The Unspoken Truth with Author Martez Burks

Many young men in this day and age tend to idolize certain aspects of life that the media portrays as the “American Way” for men to be viewed by society. Some of those influential traits include: money, cars, an assortment of women, and name brand urban clothes and shoes. It seems like so much of the media, along with rap and hip-hop, has swayed our youth into believing that this “jockish” way of living is the ideal way that our young men should live.
We recently got the chance to chat with up-and-coming author Martez Burks. Mr. Burks isn’t the typical author that most of you guys are accustomed to. Not only is the crafty Tennessee State University graduate a witty author, he is also an acclaimed promoter with the Nashville, Tennessee based entertainment company FlyMajor.com. Not the one to be satisfied, Mr. Burks is also in the works of getting his Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology.
Martez Burks had some knowledge that he wanted to drop on the readers of the Fab Life Blog.
Doc P – So Martez, with so many people showing you much love with your first published work, Memoirs of a Gentleman: The Unspoken Truth, how does it feel to get such a positive response back?
Burks – It’s actually a blessing. To visualize all of this happening then to see it actually come true is amazing. The positive feedback is encouraging. Sometimes when people step out on faith, a little anxiety creeps in. You’re not sure as to how your peers will receive you, so the positive feedback is very encouraging.
Doc P – I am really feeling the title of the work so what was the inspiration behind the title?
Burks – The title came from the idea of wanting to tell my story from Martez Burks’ perspective, but realizing that there are a lot of males I encounter with similar situations, so I wanted to make my first book something that each male can call his own. Something like a personal journal. That’s why I present questions at the end of each scenario, to get the mind going and working as well as to allow us to think about the situations we put ourselves in and how we should respond to them.
Doc P – While we’re on the subject of inspiration, what inspired you to actually go through with expressing your memoirs on a global front? A lot of males wouldn’t put themselves out there like that because some may feel that they would lose some of their swagger because they may get labeled a wimp. So what made you ultimately pursue this vision?
Burks –The vision is more personal then people may think. The purpose is driven from my brother. While growing up in the same home with the same parents, I never understood why or how we both ended up on opposite spectrums. After surpassing adolescence and entering adulthood, I finally realized that my brother suffered from a learning disability, which deprived him from achieving in school as well as I did. Having a comprehension problem while understanding literature, I wanted to prevent someone else from experiencing such by writing a book they could read and would actually consider reading. From that situation, I was inspired to pursue my dream of becoming an author, disregarding the stigma on intellectual males that I knew was bigger than me. I also felt a need to help someone else, which I feel that I am doing by inspiring others to seek greatness and by letting others know that anything is possible.
Doc P – I know you’re studying Clinical Psychology so I know the critical and cognitive thinking aspects may have come easier to you than it may have to others, but how difficult was it to actually grasp those concepts and put them with your own thoughts and ink them to paper?
Burks – I had a lot of help from others. Normally I would have the story/scenario in my head, but my peers helped me to articulate my vision into words. Often times I would write with no regards, overlooking grammatical errors and sentence fragments then afterwards have my girl read it over and fix the minor mistakes, which is helpful. A lot of the scenarios are a compilation of my situations combined with my peers.
Doc P – Now I know the feedback from the ladies has been real strong, but how have the men responded to your critical memoirs?
Burks – Actually, the men have been my biggest supporters, surprisingly. They are cooler and more laid back, often times catching me walking around campus or via emails, which seconds my reasoning for doing this. They have more questions pertaining to each scenario asking questions like “Which character were you?” or saying things like “Aye man, I got some scenarios for you next time you write a book,” which in terms means “I’m feeling the book” or they are “rocking” with it.
Doc P – I want to say big ups for recently becoming a top-ten best selling self-published author for this past March! Memoirs of a Gentleman has only been on bookshelves for a couple months so how does it feel to have reached such success already? We can already dub you as a “worldwide” author!
Burks – It’s funny because actually, I’m my worst critic. It’s hard to have the mind set as being successful because honestly I don’t feel I am, but it takes people like my mom (who is my biggest fan), my girl, and my peers to remind me to stay humble. I have high expectations for myself and anything less is not acceptable, but there are times when I reflect back before the book was published and I stated to myself that I would be thankful if one person believed in me and my book. So during those moments, I just tell God thank you and I keep pushing and striving for greatness. The response thus far has been an honor. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. To have your peers acknowledge you and believe in your dream is simply a blessing.
Doc P – Martez you are a self-proclaimed gentleman. So since you are the co-founder of the highly successful club promo company FlyMajor.com, how do you separate the stereotypical lifestyles of being a big club promoter and an author, since those two industries don’t typical cross paths?
Burks – I just lead by example. Prior to writing this book people didn’t know I was a writer, graduate student, and so forth so I just do less talking and more doing. The title as an author has brought a lot of maturity my way. I realized that I’m under a microscope and people are waiting for a slip up. I’m honored to represent both titles. It’s like a challenge from within.
Doc P – You were stated as saying, “Giving into temptation is a typical occurrence in my line of work.” So inform our male readers of how they can give into temptation, but remain a gentleman.
Burks – The concept behind being a gentleman is understanding and accepting the fact that we make mistakes. It’s not the circumstances that make the man, but how he handles himself afterwards. Owning up to your mistakes and learning from them allows you to maintain your G. No one is perfect and we all have flaws. Respect women and listening to them because we all know that men say what they feel and women feel what we say, which highlights how we think differently.
Doc P – What do you ultimately consider being a gentleman is and how do you think young men today can strive at possibly becoming a gentleman?
Burks – To add to the answers in the previous question, I can add that the cover of Memoirs of a Gentleman exemplifies the pure essence of a gentleman. The cover has a G spray painted on a wall, with multiple layers peeling off, basically reflecting how each person is comprised of different characteristics. I believe we have various traits embodied in us and we should never judge a person from one characteristic or trait. In order to get to the pure essence of a G you have to peel back each layer until you get to the core, just like the G on the cover.
Doc P – Dating and relationships have changed greatly from just a few decades ago. How do you feel about the current state of the dating scene and where it’s heading in the future?
Burks – Personally I feel it’s headed down hill. That’s why I wrote this book. I actually view Memoirs of a Gentleman as a conversational piece, something to start an intellectual conversation with the opposite sex. With technology steadily advancing like Facebook, Twitter, texting, etc., face-to-face conversations do not exist anymore. So I wanted to revive that moment by writing intriguing scenarios that people can relate with.
Doc P – What advice would you give both men and women about dating and relationships in this day and age?
Burks – Just talk and listen to each other. I believe everyone has something valuable to bring to the table (depending on their mind frame and maturity level). Dating should be fun like the good ole’ days (referring to high school or middle school depending on your age) when you use to talk on the phone all night and actually take the time out to get to know someone. I believe in order to love someone else, you first must love yourself. You can’t have what you’re not willing to pursue.
If you haven’t gotten a chance to read Memoirs of a Gentleman: The Unspoken Truth make sure to go to the websites for Barnes & Noble and Amazon and order your copy of the vividly appealing published work.
