Mental Thoughts of a Recent College Graduate

By: Eddie “Dr. Philosophy” Yancey, III

“What do I do now? Where do I go from here? What’s next in life? Where does my future lie” These are just a few of the many questions of most students who have the dignity of calling themselves recent college graduates. What once was a feat of purpose, excellence, and persistence now seems like a test of will power, determination, and patience as many recent graduates of universities, colleges, technical schools, and the like are struggling to gain access to the entrance of that “dream career job” that they envisioned while working those long hours at retail stores and restaurants as well as staying up all night to finish exams, projects, papers, and study guides. It’s so bad that a 2009 feature film called Post Grad highlighted the struggles that recent college graduates are having.

After speaking with many of my friends that are recent graduates of higher education, I’ve come to the conclusion that most recent college graduates are pretty much in three categories. The first category is the recent grad that has a career job in their field of study. The second category consists of those former students who are working at a job that has nothing to do with their degree, just to pass time until that career job does happen to come along. The third and final category is the graduate who already obtained a first degree and decided to pursue another one.

The job market hasn’t been too friendly for the recent grad, that’s why a lot of former college students aren’t in that first category. Of all of my friends who I attended school with or who attended college, I know maybe a handful or two who have a job that they actually enjoy that’s in their field of what they studied in school. So, in short, all is well and dandy with the ones in this category. They have a career job with a respectable company. The young adults in this category have some obstacles, such as possible having to pay Sallie Mae back, but all-in-all they are currently better off than the recent graduates in categories two and three.

All of the recent graduates that work in a job that has absolutely nothing to do with their degree inhabit category two. These individuals pretty much go to work just to get a paycheck. They know that they’re not going to make this job a career, unless something miraculous happens. They don’t want any part of the benefits package or anything else that would require them to stay at their job any longer than they’d have to. People that are in category two usually dislike working at their current job. To sum it up, the young adults that work at this job are just there to pass time until something better comes along.

The third category involves those graduates who said, “Forget this crazy economy and job market. I’m not going to sit here and wait around to hear back from all these companies where I applied to. I’m going back to school!” These young adults took the initiative to go back to school to gain more knowledge and beef up their resume. There’s nothing wrong with that, but the ones in this category had a lot of pros and cons to weigh when it regarded ultimately deciding on whether or not to go back to school. On one end, the current graduate students would seemingly have more classroom and practical knowledge when it pertains to their degree, giving them a better chance of standing out in a crowded workforce. On the other end, they may ultimately have more money to pay Sallie Mae, since finding funding for graduate school is way more difficult than getting undergrad paid for.

These are just a few mental thoughts that I, personally, have had since I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in May of 2009. The categories are just the grouping that I came up with after many hours of conversing with my buddies that are recent higher education grads. The category I would put myself in is probably category two. I have a job in my field, but I dislike the culture and ethics of the organization. With that said, I may be switching over to category three in the next year. Either way it goes, things will get better for me and the rest of us recent college graduates. While in undergrad, I had multiple internships, numerous jobs, above average grades, fraternity participation, and work around the community and campus and yet things still aren’t handed to me on a silver platter. My message and advice to current college students would be to stay focused on the task at hand, make good grades, utilize the equipment and technology around campus so that you can tone your craft as much as possible, get in good with the career center, build professional relationships with your professors, and attending as many career fairs and seminars as possible among other things.

These reflections are just a tale from me to other recent and upcoming graduates that things aren’t peaches and cream in the real, business world, but tough it out and weather the storm and things can’t do nothing but go up!

Ramblings with Rin

Being a fashion blogger doesn't mean you can't connect and enjoy other fashion bloggers. The thing I LOVE the most about the blogging community is the creativity, you get so inspired when you are scanning through the different sites and coming across Rin's blog was no different. When looking at Ramblings of Rin the first thing I noted was that Rin (the owner) loved thrift shopping. I love thrifters seriously they can take an item at a thrift store and make it into a fashionable piece.

Not only is Rin a blogger she is also a fashion student and her blog Ramblings With Rin gives her readers a inside view of the fashion world from her perspective, from thrifting, latest fashion updates, to her style snapshots and more. I had to get Rin on the blog and she agreed to give our FAB LIFE readers a few tips for the Fall Season and on thrift shopping.

LA: What inspires you the most about fashion?
RIN: The thing I love most about fashion is that it truly is my way of expressing myself. I always try to wear something I like and something that "speaks to me" rather than just following trends, and that I think is the true beauty of fashion: being yourself!

LA: I was going through your blog and you seem pretty big on thrift shopping, what are some pointers you can give someone who seems to not have any luck at thrifting?

RIN: Ah, yes I am a big thrift store junkie. The feeling of walking out of a thrift store with someone else garbage is actually quite thrilling. I have 3 main rules when it comes to thrift store shopping. One, Be Patient: thrift stores require time and a willingness to rummage through every rack. Second: Be open minded: I always tell my friends and readers think of what you can do with a garment. A simple hem or belt or necklace can change the whole look of a garment so think big picture! Lastly, Have Fun! So many of my thrift store finds are the ones that I tried on for a good laugh. You really never know what it will look like until you see it on so try everything (no matter how ridiculous) on!

LA: What do you think is the best part about thrifting?
RIN: I love the feeling of finding the perfect pair of pants for $10 or a adorable dress for $12 or the perfect black blazer for $13. It really is the best feeling. Its easy to go into a store and pick out a new garment but I like searching for my clothes. I have a deeper connection with my clothing that way.

LA: What summer item would you suggest all fashionista's keep to add with their Fall wardrobe?
RIN: This is a hard one. I would have to say that any fun bright colored jewelry. We are seeing a lot of muted palettes for fall, so it is important to keep your outfit looking fresh and jewelry and accessories is the easiest (and cheapest) way.

LA: When thrifting do you try to follow the trends for the season or do you go more with your own personal style?
RIN: A little bit of both. I feel its important to listen to your heart first but keep in mind upcoming trends. I have always had a knack for predicting trends but I wasn't really aware of it because I just bought what I loved. They just happened to be items that were or were going to be in fashion.

LA: Tell Fab Life viewers a little more about your own fashion blog?
RIN: My fashion blog, Ramblings with Rin, started in about mid February but has just recently gotten more followers. I blog about what I love: thrifting, cool items, furniture, pictures, my daily outfits inspiration. I blog about stores I like and blogs i like. I just try to offer inspiration to people and I love getting inspiration. I feel like we can all use each others help. Ideas all have to start somewhere, and I hope my blog can offer that.

LA: What advice would you give someone on personal style and thrifting?
RIN: BE YOURSELF! I cannot stress this enough. Do not worry about looking ridiculous or out there. Buy what attracts you or speak to your own personal style. Always have an open mind because fashion is never and will never be put in a box. Have fun with what you are wearing to because that is what truly sells a look or trend!

To Review or Not Review: Reebok

Reebok EasyTone Shoes
To Review or Not Review

For months I have been trying to decide whether or not to purchase Reebok EasyTone Shoes for a review or not! Ok wait let me give some of you guys that is a little clueless on Reebok EasyTone Shoes a little background (Just a little).

"An innovative footwear solution designed to tone and strengthen key leg muscles with every step."

Reebok has released commercials, videos, and even workout plans for their EasyTone shoes. Every time I come across a commercial I think to myself could a shoe really tone and strengthen my leg muscles? I know that tone legs on a woman is beautiful and we have seen the continuous praising of female celebrities by the media for tone legs. So, it was to no surprise to read so many reviews from women who purchased the shoes in order to get that tone and strengthen leg muscles.

Needless to say the mix reviews of Reebok Easytone did not help me to figure out if I really wanted to purchase the shoes or just return to the gym. What I found interesting about the shoes is that a lot of the reviews talked about pain from knee pain, leg pain, back pain, numbed toes that all worried me! I know when you work out you feel a little pain and they always say that pain is a good thing, when you can feel the burn you are actually working out but BACK PAIN? NUMB TOES? After I continued to read on and found that many other readers noted pain also but that the pain usually goes away after a few weeks to a month. Ok, so now my head is spinning can someone seriously tell me what's up with Reebok Easytone or what?

I don't know if I should go ahead and cut my foot off and hand it over with the purchase or go ahead and purchase the shoes and give it a try?

Another interesting take on reviews...some reviewers noted that after a few weeks they still couldn't notice a slight difference in their legs but that the shoes provided them with great balance and put a little extra pep in their step when they did their walking exercises in the shoes...well I guess everything works for something!!!

TN Model Feature: Amberlynn Holder

Where are you from? Originally Connecticut but I’ve been living in TN for 14 years now!
How long have you been modeling? Four years.
Biggest Accomplishment modeling so far?
Wow, this is a tough one. There are many things that I feel have been great accomplishments for me in my modeling career, since I’ve started. When I think of the “biggest” accomplishment, one of the first things that comes to my mind would be seeing my first model portfolio for the first time. It was a huge sense of accomplishment! Seeing the final product of all of my hard work, and everyone’s involved, as well as knowing that this was a tool to begin my professional career which was an amazing feeling.
Most Memorable Modeling Moment?
Attending an open call at Wilhelmina Agency in NYC. It was one of the most stressful yet most wonderful experiences of my life so far. From landing at the wrong building, to running to the subway in 4-inch heels, going in the agency and looking cool, calm, and refreshed, and then trying to find my way off of Park Avenue South for the next hour and a half. It was an experience that really taught me more about the industry and gave me a taste of what models in larger markets deal with on a regular basis. It was truly a “if you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen” type of moment that ensured me that this is a career that I’m very passionate about and that I can do. Now that I can navigate through NYC, I can’t wait to do it again!
Dream Job?
Being the face of a major beauty or editorial ad campaign(s). Also, working as a model consistently is a goal of mine. Runway, print, editorial, beauty, catalog…. all of it is wonderful and something that I am pursuing.
Upcoming Projects?
•I’m currently working on building my résumé and portfolio through working and collaborating with creative and innovative designers, photographers, stylists, MUA’s and boutiques.
•I am actively working on marketing myself and looking into signing with a great, reputable agency that is passionate about the business, that will help to develop me as a model, plan a successful career path and find great work opportunities.
•The Fall ’10 Season is going to be packed with fashion shows, trunks shows, castings, portfolio shoots, and Fashion Week Nashville!
•A few other projects in the works for development with two of my modeling/talent mentors, Dee J. and Rita Williamson, a former model agent.

….The Fun Facts
Favorite Party Song“Wipe Me Down”-Lil Boosie
Favorite Designer
Another tough one! It’s definitely between John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, and Amanda Valentine.
Favorite Nashville hangout spot
The whole city is my hangout spot! However, I do have to say that I patronize Green Hills Mall quite a bit =).
Unusual hobby you have?
Each season I will go through my closet and create a collection with my clothing inspired by a haute couture collection. This Fall ’10 season is inspired by Derek Lam’s Fall collection.
