Ella, The New Plan B Approved by FDA


Ella, the new morning after pill to prevent pregnancy was recently approved be the FDA. Ella, also known at the emergency contraception pill, has been approved in tablet form by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The new morning after pill is also used in Europe is called the EllaOne. Ella in the US is a prescription-only-product, and prevents pregnancy if taken within five days after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure. The FDA is stressing that Ella is not taking as a regular contraceptive.

Ella contains ulipristal, a non-hormonal drug that blocks the effects of key hormones necessary for conception.
Ella's effectiveness does not fade for 120 hours (five days) after sex, regardless of whether the hormonal surge has occurred.
Ella is manufactured by Paris-based Laboratoire HRA Pharma.

Remember Ella is by prescription only and side-effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, pain/discomfort during menstruation (dysmenorrhea), fatigue, and dizziness. The drug should not be taken by women who are pregnant or nursing.
